Tri-town police receive outpouring of support

In the wake of two police-involved shootings and the shooting of Dallas police officers last week, residents are showing their support for  tri-town police with kind words, snacks and cards.

“We had people that were coming into the station on Friday…being very pro police,” said Mattapoisett Chief Mary Lyons.

She said one resident came by to shake the hands of each officer on duty, others dropped off cards and food.

“I think it came at a good time when you’re questioning what’s going on and all the violence,” said Lyons. “It’s everyone’s worst nightmare.”

Marion Police Chief Lincoln Miller said many residents have stopped him to express their support for the department as well as to leave cards and a Dunkin Donuts’ gift card.

“Things like that, it helps out with times like this,” said Miller, who said the Dallas shooting was a “terrible tragedy” during what was a peaceful protest.

Rochester Chief Paul Magee said he was disheartened by last week’s news, but was buoyed by the community, “from young and old.”

Kids brought handmade cards, and others took pizzas, cupcakes, cookies and cards to the department. People also offered encouraging words to the officers.

“I wasn’t in the most upbeat mood when I came into work [on Friday.] The actions of the residents here changed my mindset,” he said.
