Tri-town school committees look to consolidate meetings

Tri-town schools haven’t regionalized yet, but they do share a lot of administrative staff who go to four monthly school committee meetings and one quarterly meeting.

Some have suggested that so many hours of meetings, often repeating the same information four times, has resulted in a higher turnover rate at the central office.

On Thursday, the Joint School Committee discussed possible ways to consolidate meetings.

“I certainly think there’s areas of overlap where we could come together,” said Christine Winters.

But she added, “We need to make sure we don’t lose the local tenor of our local communities. I don’t think it should be at the full loss of our regular meetings.”

The group discussed holding periodic meetings with all of the committees to discuss big picture issues such as MCAS test results. Another idea that seemed more favorable came from Assistant Superintendent Elise Frangos who suggested holding two meetings on one night with a common meeting time in the middle.

The central office will make a plan with dates along those lines and the Joint School Committee will discuss it at the November meeting. Superintendent Doug White said he hopes to implement the plan after January 1.
