Tri-town schools awarded Cape Cod Five grants
Cape Cod Five has awarded two mini-grants to educational project in Mattapoisett.
The grants were awarded at the 16th Annual Educational Mini-Grants Awards & Reception at Cape Cod Community College on Jan. 20. During the event, 106 grants were presented by the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Trust of which 14 were awarded to teachers at eight Southeastern Massachusetts schools.
The awards were presented by the Chairman of the Foundation’s Youth and Education Advisory Committee, Mairead Graf, who emceed the event.
Dorothy Savarese, Cape Cod Five’s president, CEO and chair of the bank’s charitable foundation, told educators that their projects represent “new and innovative ideas – ideas that demonstrate the creativity, energy and commitment of our teachers both to their students and their profession.”
All kindergarten through 12th grade public educators from the communities served by Cape Cod Five were invited, and more than 130 people attended. Award recipients from both this and last year made presentations, sharing key elements of their projects.
In the fall, public school teachers from all grade levels on the Cape, Islands and Southeastern Massachusetts were invited to submit applications for the grants in the fall. Teachers use the grants to offer unique educational programs that would otherwise not be available to their students. The projects cover a wide variety of disciplines.
Since the Educational Mini-Grants program’s inception in 2000, more than 900 grants totaling more than $335,000 have been awarded.
In the tri-town a grant was awarded to improve students’ social language skills through role playing and stories at Center School. Old Rochester Regional High School also received a grant to purchase supplies for sets in the upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
