Tri-town seeks $370,000 grant for sewer truck

Nov 22, 2013

Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester have jointly applied for a state Community Innovation Challenge grant worth $370,000 to purchase a sewer vacuum truck.

The towns met a Nov. 22 grant deadline with a couple days to spare. Last year $4 million was awarded to Massachusetts cities and towns from the program, which is in its second year. Challenge grants support innovative regionalization and other cost-saving measures, according to the state.

Marion’s grant writer Pamela Marean worked with tri-town leaders to coordinate the application.

“This would be a great benefit not only to Marion, but to Mattapoisett and Rochester as well,” Marion Town Administrator Paul Dawson said.

If the grant is awarded, the truck would be housed in Rochester, insured by Marion, and available to all three towns for sewer clean up and clearing catch basins to improve drainage.

Rochester’s Highway Surveyor Jeff Eldridge said he was on board with the application.

“I think [the truck] is a great item to regionalize,” he said.
