Tri-town teachers to take on Harlem Ambassadors
In a recent teacher vs. student basketball game, the kids bested their instructors by only one point. But when tri-town teachers and Lions Club members take the court on April 4 against the Harlem Ambassadors, they’ll be lucky to get near the basket.
The Harlem Ambassadors travel the country entertaining audiences with their fast-moving hoop hijinks. The for-profit company, composed of college graduates who are all drug free, helps community groups and organizations raise funds through their performances.
The Rochester and Mattapoisett Lions Clubs are organizing the game together and last brought the team to the Old Rochester Regional High School gym in 2011.
“We donated $1,000 to the ORR district to fund programs to pay for fees for students who couldn’t afford the extracurricular fee,” said Mattapoisett Lions Club President Don Bamberger. “It’s really important to developing a well-rounded person.”
The Lions Club also donated money for elementary school classroom supplies and hopes to do the same with proceeds from the April 4 game.
Members of the Lions Clubs as well as teachers, aka the Tri-town Trotters, will play against the Harlem Ambassadors, who always interact with the audience during their games.
“They have a real good program – stay in school, stay off of drugs,” said Bamberger.
He added that elementary and junior high students would really enjoy the show.
Before the game, the Lions Clubs invite people to tailgate and will sell hamburgers and hot dogs, also to raise funds for schools.
The event begins at 7 p.m. at the ORR gym. Tailgating begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and children under 6 free.
Tickets are available at Lloyd's Market in Rochester, Panino's in Mattapoisett, the Marion General Store, tri-town elementary schools or online at mattrochesterlions.brownpapertickets.com. They will also be at available for purchase at the door for an additional $2.
