Tri-town teams fight cancer at 14th annual Relay for Life

Jun 19, 2016

When it comes to fighting cancer, Team Sole Survivor of the Relay for Life of Tri-Town & Wareham is far from a one-person fundraising machine.

In the 14th annual event held on Saturday and Sunday, members of the tri-town based team raised approximately $13,000 for cancer research.

Team Captain Mary Tripp of Mattapoisett said this was the 10th year her team participated. Relay For Life is a national American Cancer Association fundraising event that raises money for cancer research. It operates on a volunteer basis, and relies on community fundraising efforts.

Tripp said the past few years the eight-person team has raised a considerable amount of money.

“I have the best teammates,” said Tripp. “This is the fifth year in a row we’ve raised more than $10,000.”

This marked the first year that the Wareham and tri-town Relays merged, and the combined event was held at the Wareham Middle School track. Previously, the tri-town Relay for Life occurred at the Old Rochester Regional High School track.

Tricia Hackett, the event’s co-chair, said the two committees collaborated to make the fundraiser a success.

“We had some challenges merging the two events,” said Hackett. “But the two committees came together and really worked hard to make this event an awesome one for everybody.”

Together, the 23 teams and more than 300 people raised $70,000 as of June 17. Hackett said she expected that a total of $90,000 would be donated before Aug. 31.

John Koors, a Relay for Life community manager, said this year’s event was designed to foster more participation following the merge.

“We wanted to create a sense of inclusion and get more families and kids involved,” said Koors. “A lot more interaction, more people staying up all night.”

The Relay for Life featured games, music, dancing and food, as well as other activities that paid tribute to loves ones who succumbed to cancer and survivors.

Hackett said organizers were already looking forward to 2017’s Relay for Life.

“We hope everyone comes back next year,” said Hackett.

Even though the event ended June 19, it’s not too late to donate. Donations can be made online here.
