Turkey Trot brings out nearly 500 participants
You won’t catch these turkeys on the table for Thanksgiving.
The Marion Recreation Department’s first 5K Turkey Trot brought out 476 runners and walkers to take part in a little ‘fowl’ play for a good cause on Sunday, Nov. 20.
Recreation Department Director Jody Dickerson said the money raised from the event would help support programs held by the department.
“There aren’t many races in the fall, and we wanted a good fundraiser for the holidays,” Dickerson said. “And to have this many people show up for a first-time event, it’s just incredible.”
Among those dressed up for the Turkey Trot were Marion residents Michelle Russell and her 12-year-old daughter, Lulu.
“We love the Recreation Department,” Michelle said. “They do a lot of great things for the town.”
Lulu, who is an avid runner, finished first in her age group.
Overall winner Taylor Washburn said the course was perfect for a November 5K.
“The whole thing was awesome,” said Washburn, who is also a math and history teacher at Tabor. “The weather was good and there was a little competition going on. That helped push everybody in the front to go faster.”
The race started at the Baxter House on Front Street and looped around the village for a finish at the Fireman Auditorium.
