Turkey Trot runs through Marion

Nov 20, 2016

It was a brisk morning for a 5K on Sunday as the annual Turkey Trot 5K kicked off, but that didn't deter Wonder Woman.

Clad in her superhero outfit, Donna Simmons said she always dresses up for races.

“I've been doing this for four years now,” she said. “I do it because it's fun. It makes people happy.”

Simmons was one of 182 people who completed the 5K, which began and end at Tabor Academy and is hosted by Marion Recreation as a fundraiser for programs.

“It's one of our bigger events and fundraisers for our programs,” MarionRec Director Jody Dickerson said. He added, “I wish it was a little warmer, [but] people are in great spirits.”

The cold wind had noses red, but also, no doubt, encouraged runners to speed towards the finish line.

Zachary Bentley, 18 of Acushnet, finished first one second shy of 18 minutes, followed by 17-year-old Jack Gordon of Marion at 18:41 and Jason Gonsalves, 34 of Assonet, 19:11.

The top three female finishers were Sophia Arruda, 13 of Lakeville, with 21:33; Isabelle Cheney, 14 of Marion, with 21:40 and Megan Sheehan, 32 of Marion, with 22:52.
