Two take out nomination papers for Mattapoisett Selectman seat
It’s still too early to tell if there will be a race for Selectman this year, but incumbent Tyler Macallister and newcomer Barbara Ketchel have both taken out nomination papers for the open seat.
The three-year term is one of several that will be up for a vote at the annual town election on Tuesday, May 16.
Nomination papers for all openings are available at the Town Clerk’s Office, located at Town Hall. Residents have until Friday, March 24 to obtain papers.
So far, only two people have submitted papers. Town Moderator John Eklund returned his papers on Feb. 13 for another one-year term in his position, and Public Library Trustee Ruth Jolliffe submitted her paperwork for another three-year term in late January. Virginia Beams’ seat is also up for election, but so far the only other person who has taken out papers is Jennifer Russell.
On the Mattapoisett School Committee, Chair James Higgins and Harry Hunts seats are open. Earlier this year, Higgins said he would not run again. Hunt has yet to take out papers for the three-year term.
There are also two seats open on the Planning Board, one to complete a term left empty by John Mathieu who resigned in July. That term has one year left while another five-year term, left open by Mary Crain who is now the town planner, is also open. Janice Robbins was appointed to Crain’s seat until the election and has pulled papers to run for the position.
The other seats are as follows: Assessor, three years; town clerk, three years; Community Preservation Committee, two years, three seats; Board of Health, three years; Old Rochester Regional School Committee, three years and two years; water and sewer commissioner, three years; Mattapoisett Housing Authority, four years.
