Undefeated ORR girls cross country wins conference meet
Another year, another undefeated season for the Old Rochester Regional High School girls cross country team.
On Monday, the girls won the South Coast Conference Championship, beating out schools from across the South Coast in Washburn Park. This is the third year the girls earned the conference title while maintaining a perfect record.
“We’re a young team, but there’s a lot of depth. A lot of the girls posses talent they don’t even know they have,” said runner Sam Barrett, who placed second overall at the meet.
Barrett said team chemistry helped the girls again. Though it’s a large squad with 62 athletes total on both the boys and girls team, Barrett said spirit is high.
“This is going to sound super corny, but it really is like a family,” she said. “After school, it doesn’t matter if we had a bad day because we’re looking forward to running with each other.”
Following Barrett, Emily Josephson placed third; Paige Santos took the fifth spot.
On the boys team, Senior Mike Wyman continued his season with another win and remained personally undefeated throughout the year.
Wyman placed first overall by a wide margin. He postponed his usual post race five-mile cool down to meet with a college scout and well-wishers.
“It’s always nice to see you run,” one Dighton-Rehoboth fan told Wyman after the race. Wyman’s year also saw him place first at a state meet, where he ran the 3.1 course in 15:16.
Wyman said the boys team was hurt by the loss of seven top runners, who graduated last year.
Despite that, the team is posed to improve in the coming years.
“I think we’ve done really well considering how young of a team we are,” Wyman said.
Other teams to compete included Apponequet, Bourne, Case, Dighton-Rehoboth, Fairhaven, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, and Seekonk.
