Undefeated ORR track teams race to championships

May 2, 2012

With their first state championship under their sneakers and an undefeated 2012 season, Old Rochester Regional’s track team is speeding towards another championship win.

There are still three weeks to go until then, but coaches Bill and Cindy Tilden are looking to get as many students across the victory line as possible.

The team started the season in the beginning of April after graduating a number of key athletes.

“We have a young team. We lost some pretty big dogs last year,” said Bill. “We have some shoes to fill, but we have had more kids that are running even faster.”

So far, Bill said 13 boys and 10 girls have qualified for the state championships but estimates that number will rise by the time the competition arrives.

The Tilden’s took their students to the state relays on Saturday, April 28 where around 40 other teams were competing.

“We’ll get a look at all the other teams and see who we need to match up against at the state championship level,” said Bill.

For another shot at the championships, Tilden said he’s been working his athletes hard since the season started.

“We’re going to keep getting them faster and stronger as the season wears on. The key part is trying to keep them healthy,” he said.

With spring warming up, Bill believes the students’ performance will improve.

“At all of our meets, the weather has been pretty cold,” he said. “Our kids get a whole lot faster when it warms up.”
