UPDATED: Building gets torn down making way for two-story Cumberland Farms

Jan 19, 2012

Construction of America’s first two-story Cumberland Farms building is now underway —right here in Marion.

Scott Schedin of South Coast Development said work at 406 Wareham Road started Wednesday, with a goal of opening the new building by Memorial Day.

The construction comes after more than two years of back-and-forth permit changes and appeals by the Framingham-based convenience store chain with the town. The Planning Board approved the final permits at the beginning of November 2011.

Although the second story won’t be used for retail, Schedin said it would be used for storage space. The building size will be bigger as well.

“We’re giving the whole property and enhanced look,” Schedin said. “There’s a lot of asphalt there, and a lot of it will become landscaping. It will look a lot better than it does now.”

Schedin also said little change is being made to the amount of parking at the property.

On Jan. 18, Schedin and his crew tore down the former building to make way for the two-story Cumberland Farms. Schedin said the foundation is set to be laid out in two weeks time and that the project is on schedule.
