WITH VIDEO: Marion residents, officials gather for the annual Memorial Day Parade
It was a day of remembrance in Marion as the annual Memorial Day Parade worked its way through the Village on May 28.
Old Rochester Regional High School senior Mikayla Florio helped open the day's observances singing "God Bless America."
"It's my passion to serve my community by singing," Florio said. "Both of my grandfathers served in World War II, and multiple of my family members served in other wars so it's important for me to be here. I just always really enjoy services like these."
After the opening observances, residents, Scouts, the Sippican School band, town officials and members of the Benjamin D. Cushing VFW Post 2425 began the march from the Music Hall to the Town House to Old Landing Cemetery.
Selectmen Chair John Henry reflected on his time in the Army at the Town House observance ceremony.
"This is the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War," Henry said. "I was 16-years-old at the time and studying at Tabor Academy. Then I went to college and did two assignments in the Army. Then I went to Vietnam. It shows you the intractable nature of these things as we know today with Iraq and Afghanistan. People go back and they go back to do their duty."
The annual observances are in memory of both the fallen heroes and the ones still serving their country, Henry said.
"It's a somber occasion," Henry said. "There have been over one million Americans who have died serving their country since the Revolution. This is a tribute to the people who did their duty. I ask that all of you think about the people still serving."
