WITH VIDEOS: 'Children's Christmas Concert' returns to Marion

Dec 9, 2012

With Christmas fast approaching, local musicians are bringing an extensive selection of holiday music to Marion.

On Sunday, the Tri-County Symphonic Band and the Sippican School Concert Choir teamed up for the sixth annual “Children’s Christmas Concert.”

Directed by Patricia Richard, the school choir provided vocals while the Symphonic Band, directed by Phil Sanborn, kept the beat for a variety of holiday songs from England, France, Spain, the Caribbean, and more.

Of the musical variety, band member Roger Haber said, “It’s guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday mood.”

The songs were chosen by both the band and the choir.

"We try to change it up, but we do have some standards that we play," Sanborn said. "We want to keep it light yet somewhat challenging for the musicians to play. It's a balance."

While the band played, the Sippican School elves handed out prizes and unleashed two dozen beach balls to help set the tone for the tropical song, “Christmas Calypso."

This came as a surprise to the audience as well as for Sanborn, who said the idea came from the elves and the Sippican School Band Director Hannah Moore.

"It was fun," Sanborn said.

The concert is about giving back, Sanborn said.

"We wanted to do something for the community and we decided to hold a free concert," Sanborn said. "We decided that the best way to do that was to make it for families. We have kids from ages 9 months to 90 in attendance."

With the annual Village Holiday Stroll following the concert on Sunday, Sanborn said the timing of the event was "perfect."
