Vikings' speed overpowers ORR boys basketball team
The Old Rochester Regional Bulldogs boys basketball team faced an opponent similar to itself in Friday's 61-42 loss to the Wareham Vikings.
Both teams ran similar, fast break offenses.
With both offenses running the floor, defensive endurance was challenged.
“We did make a run at them, but we just couldn’t sustain it,” Coach Steve Carvalho said.
The Bulldogs came within 10 points several times during the third quarter, but each time the Vikings withstood the Bulldogs’ push.
“We allowed the Wareham kids to mentally, even physically, take the game from us,” Carvalho said. “Those moments, in those 6-0 runs down here in this environment, it was too much for us to come back from.”
The environment was energetic, and not just from the Vikings’ home crowd.
The Bulldogs brought a loud, energetic group of students who stood for the entire game.
This support even caught the attention of Vikings coach Kevin Brogioli, whose day job is as principal of ORR Junior High School.
“This place would have erupted had ORR won tonight with their fans,” Brogioli said. “We didn’t want to see that happen.”
The Vikings took control in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t shoot well, I don’t know what the exact numbers were, but I know they’re not good,” Carvalho said. “I thought we played a little tense.”
