Village at Mattapoisett to have trash pickup through town

After waiting months to get an answer, the residents of the Village at Mattapoisett were given the right to receive free trash pickup by the Planning Board.

The special permits given to the Village condominiums by the Planning Board put in a condition that trash pickup would be paid for by the owners of the development.

The cost for ABC Disposal to pickup trash is around $8,000 for the Village at Mattapoisett, but residents say that the company would collect trash and recycling from the private development – just as it does non private developments – with no extra charge.

Residents Dan Daluz and Steve Pickup asked for a full board to be present before voting on the request, which they got on Monday night.

With him Daluz brought new information: That the town’s contract with SEMASS, which charges the town a fee per ton of trash collected, affects each address in Mattapoisett.

According to Daluz, SEMASS only makes contracts with municipalities, not with individual developments.

“SEMASS just contracts with town not individual condominiums. No matter how much you pay per ton,” Pickup explained.

What the development residents are paying for is simply pickup and ABC will do that under its agreement with the town. Planning Board member John Mathieu looked at the contract and said, “The contract is very clear that if you reside in town, you get trash pickup.”

As such, the Planning Board voted to add a condition to the existing special permit that if a trash contract is inclusive to all residences, then the private development does not need to pay a separate fee.

A notice must be sent out six months in advance of a change.

Next, the Board of Health will need to approve the addition or notify ABC about the new arrangement.
