Voters to consider $19 million budget at Rochester Town Meeting
Rochester Town Meeting voters will decide if the town should adopt a budget that increased $668,000 compared to last year to cover expenses associated with the fire department, school and cost of living increases.
The Annual Town Meeting starts Monday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Rochester Memorial School auditorium.
Town Administrator Rich LaCamera said the total budget is just over $19 million. The town’s share of state aid increased $46,000 this year, which LaCamera said is disappointing.
“We are pretty much level funded over the past five years,” he said. “It’s been a difficult challenge for us.”
He praised the school committee for ensuring that the Rochester Memorial School budget increased $82,000.
“They did an excellent job in their budget. That’s a small increase,” he said.
LaCamera said he expects there will be discussion on a projected $100,000 increase to the fire department’s budget.
Last year, voters approved upgrading the town’s ambulance service from basic life support to advanced life support. The change improves the type of care EMTs provide.
Fire Chief Scott Weigel will be on hand to answer voter’s questions, LaCamera said. The fire department is also set to receive $30,000 to upgrade equipment and $23,000 to improve its communications center.
In addition to the budget, voters will weigh in on 11 warrant articles, including one that will have appeared before voters for a third time on Monday night.
In November, voters refused to restore language to a flood plain bylaw almost a year after local leaders mistakenly deleted it at the 2012 Annual Town Meeting.
Without the language the town will not be eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program. That means residents would not be allowed to get subsidized flood insurance.
Planning Board members and Selectmen have urged voters to adopt the article.
