Wareham Gatemen touch base with kids at Mattapoisett Library
Kids came to the Mattapoisett Library armed with baseballs and gloves on Wednesday morning to meet members of the Wareham Gatemen, a collegiate summer league baseball team.
The players visit the library every year and read baseball themed children's books. This year they also answered questions from kids and adults, including Jake Garcia, a journalist announcing for the team this summer.
When asked what he has to do to get ready for the games, Garcia said, "Before every game I do two hours of prep."
Sometimes that preparation goes out the window. He said there was one fluke this season that was challenging for the whole team. A game had three delays and then the sprinklers on the field went off, ending all chance of hitting the diamond.
The Gatemen were also asked about their positions on the team. Left-handed pitcher Evan Hill of Michigan and right-handed pitcher Zac Houston of Mississippi demonstrated their form as did outfielder Connor Beck of Texas.
Afterwards, the players signed autographs.
The storms from earlier in the morning had cleared by then, so the athletes headed outside with their fans to play catch on the library lawn.
