#Wegotthis: Old Hammondtown staff and students compete on the court

Mar 19, 2016

Every year the Old Hammondtown School staff play a basketball game against the sixth grade class, and, well, every year they lose.

"We've never won one. This year, we got this," said physical education teacher Chad Cabeceiras, pointing to the staff's game day shirts with #wegotthis printed on the back.

Turns out, maybe it should have said #wealmostgotthis. The friendly game was close throughout with the sixth graders leading by a slight 19-16 margin. But the teachers got schooled in the second half as their students pulled ahead for a 52-43 win.

Still, the OHS staff didn't go easy.

"I think it's actually really hard. The teachers are really good," sixth grader Logan Fernandes said at halftime. "It's gonna be tough."

Cabeceiras said the annual game, played at the Old Rochester Regional High School gym, is a fun event for the kids.

"It's a great way to get the sixth graders to come together," he said.

The lively game was made even livelier by the OHS Pep Band. This year band director Emily LeFleur invited alumni and parents to play, pumping up the crowd with at least 15 additional musicians.

"I wanted to go big this year," said LeFleur. "It's a little more peppy!"

The teams had a packed house of friends and family to cheer them on. The turnout also helped support a local charity and the Mattapoisett PTA. Entry to the event was canned goods for the St. Vincent dePaul Food Pantry or a donation to the PTA. There were also raffles to support the PTA.
