Westport knocks ORR boys basketball out of playoffs

For a season packed with enough suspense to fill a SportsCenter highlight reel it’s only fitting the Bulldogs witnessed another memorable moment Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, it was one that ended the Old Rochester Regional High School’s boys basketball team playoff run.

The Westport High School Wildcats held off the determined Bulldogs 57-55 at Taunton High School in the South Division 3 semifinals.

A desperate 3-point shot from Westport’s Tommy Yeargin in the final minutes tied the game. The ball was knocked loose after a rebound. Yeargin’s shot, while not pretty, was good. The Bulldogs didn’t regain the lead after that.

“If he doesn’t drain that ridiculous three it’s a different game,” one fan was overheard saying. “That was a prayer.”

The loss knocked out the top-seeded Bulldogs.

ORR started the game slowly. At the end of the first quarter the boys were behind 20-11 and at the end of the first half were down 33-24.

After halftime the Bulldogs closed the gap in just two minutes on an incredible scoring run. The boys also improved their defense and senior Jeremy Bare blocked a number of key shots.

At the end of the third quarter ORR led 46-40. Coach Steve Carvalho’s locker room pep talk must have hit a nerve.

“They were a step behind in the first half, but made some adjustments and sustained that energy in the third quarter,” Carvalho said.

Up six at the start of the final quarter with ORR’s cheering section yelling for more points, the Bulldogs couldn’t fend off the Wildcats.

After Yeargin’s three point shot the Bulldogs remained close. A basket courtesy of Raekwon Philips put the team within two points and the hope to tie and send the game into overtime. But a Bulldog full court press on the final play wasn’t enough to keep Westport at bay.

The team ended the season with a 17-5 record. Reflecting on the team, which saw ORR beat Wareham for the first time in recent memory, Carvalho said players won’t soon forget this year.

“It’s certainly been a season to remember,” he said.

ORR leading scorers for the semifinal game were Jeremy Bare, 14 points, Raekwon Philips, 12 points, and Jordan Menard, 10 points.
