Wireless tower hearing postponed, abutters concerned

Jun 5, 2012

Industrial Tower and Wireless was a no-show for a Mattapoisett Planning Board hearing on Monday, June 4 to discuss a proposed cell phone tower off Marion Road.

The company, which requested its second continuance to postpone the hearing, is seeking a 145-foot tower that would fill “a significant gap in coverage for most major wireless efforts,” said representative Kevin Delaney at a previous meeting.

At the meeting on Monday, both the board and abutters were apprehensive about the proposal, which board member John Mathieu said would not pass unless the company could prove a need.

One issue of concern with the proposal was a balloon test, conducted for four hours on Friday, May 11. The purpose of the test was to show abutters the tower’s visibility.

Mathieu as well as board member Karen Field said they didn’t see the balloon.

“If they perform a balloon test, it will not give an idea at all what they actually construct,” said abutter Jack Hillier.

Hillier researched other towers built by the company and said, “They’re not unattractive sites, but they’re in zones that are clearly industrial or commercial, nothing remotely representing a residential zone.”

Brad Hathaway of Aucoot Road said a similar request was made for a tower several years ago.

“The residents in the Aucoot area objected to this for a number of reasons, including health concerns,” said Hathaway. “The Planning Board went to Town Meeting and asked voters to set aside land for cellular towers that would not be in residential areas.”

Mathieu made a motion to grant Industrial Tower and Wireless a two-week continuance for the hearing saying, “I don’t believe the public has had an opportunity to question them yet.”

The next meeting will be on Monday, June 18 meeting at 7 p.m.
