'Women in Waders' take to the water
There are ladies who lunch and now women who wade. The Buzzards Bay Coalition begins a new three-event series on Thursday called “Women in Waders” to encourage women on the South Coast to get outside and engage with the bay.
“It’s open to different ages of women who may be wondering about these activities but haven’t tried them out yet,” said Senior Educator Margo Connolly.
The nonprofit organization’s Bay Adventures program runs throughout the year and is open to everyone. At one of the program's events in Wareham last fall, a women asked Connolly if she’d ever considered organizing an event specifically for ladies.
“That got me thinking,” Connolly said. “It would be really fun to do something that is more women focused.”
The “Women in Waders” program, like many of the coalition’s events, is free. Each event is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and takes place the first three Thursdays in June.
The first adventure is June 5 at Camp Massasoit in Mattapoisett. Women will don waders and hop into Mattapoisett Harbor for “Seeking Shellfish,” a program that will teach them how to dig for quahogs as well as shuck clams. This will be a “dig and release” activity unless a participant has a valid Mattapoisett shellfish permit.
On June 12, women will be “Bugging Out” at LaPalme Farm in Acushnet where they will learn about macroinvertebrates (translation “big water bugs”.) Participants will learn about the interesting adaptations of these unusual creatures. And as a note for the squeamish, Connolly promises the bugs won’t jump into anyone’s clothing.
The final event, “Crazy About Crabs,” on June 19 will again be at Camp Massasoit and focus on luring blue crabs to shore and picking them up without getting pinched. Wear clothes and shoes that can get muddy.
“It’s going to be a very supportive environment. I’m picturing a lot of laughter,” said Connolly.
Connolly said girls eight and up, accompanied by an adult, are welcome. The group size for each program is 10 to 15 so RSVPs are required.
And, said Connolly, “Even though we are focusing these towards women, we have a full listing [of adventures] on our website.”
