Write-in candidate steps forward for Planning Board seat
Planning Board member may not be the toughest job in Rochester, but residents certainly aren’t clamoring to serve on it.
No one submitted papers to run for the board’s one open seat in the town’s upcoming election. However, Town Clerk Naida Parker said one resident, Lee Carr, asked about the position on Friday, Feb. 21 – one day after the deadline to submit nominations passed.
She encouraged the longtime general contractor to submit a letter asking to be appointed to the seat, left vacant after Bob Francis resigned last year.
“It was too late to get in through the nomination process,” said Parker. “In the interim, I told him it might be good to get his feet wet and appoint him to the vacant position.”
The Planning Board and Selectmen will meet jointly Tuesday, Feb. 25 to consider the appointment.
If approved, he would serve until the election.
Carr said he would seek election to the seat as a write-in candidate. His low-key campaign started Monday.
“I bought two signs today,” Carr said. “One to put in front of my house and one to put in front of the barbershop down the street.”
If elected, Carr would join board member Mike Murphy who was also a write-in candidate. During his write-in campaign, Murphy garnered three votes.
“I’ve got family in town. I think I can get at least three people to vote for me,” Carr joked before the Selectmen’s Feb. 24 meeting.
Carr has served on the town’s historic commission for a few years. He said his contracting background would serve him well on the board. Also, he would like to have a hand in town government.
“I live in the center of town and I have an interest in what’s going on,” he said.
Rochester’s election is set for April 9.
