Y feeds underprivileged kids
The Mattapoisett YMCA is in its second year of delivering food to underprivileged children, and this year the program has doubled its outreach.
At the end of each week, the Y delivers 200 bags of food to Alfred J. Gomes Elementary School and 100 bags to Hayden-McFadden Elementary School. Each bag contains two breakfasts, two lunches and two snacks for students to take home on the weekend.
Ellyn Gallant, a Mattapoisett YMCA alum, is the principal of Gomes and saw the opportunity for the program to help some of her less fortunate students. She coordinated with Joe Marciszyn, the executive director of the Mattaposiett branch, and also recommended Hayden-McFadden to him for the program.
“Gomes was going through a lot of transitions last year, and we wanted to see what we could do to help,” Marciszyn said.
The Y buys much of its food through the Greater Boston Food Bank and supplements that with donations from partnerships with the Mattapoisett Library and Mattapoisett Congregational Church.
“We wish we could get all the food through donations, but that’s not really feasible,” Marciszyn said.
Each school has its own set-up, but essentially, volunteers drop the food off at the schools and the students who receive it get to leave class a few minutes early to go pick up their bag for the weekend.
“All the filtering [of who gets a bag] is done through the counselors at the school,” Marciszyn said.
The program will continue every week throughout the school year. As for next year, Marciszyn isn’t sure if the program will continue to grow, but he knows never to say never.
“If you asked me last year, one hundred and fifty was all it was going to be,” he said. “I’d love to see us be able to do more, but at this time I can’t say if we’re going to be able to.”
