Town gets down at Marion Block Party

Aug 24, 2013

This film quote best describes the unlikely revival of the Marion Block Party: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”

Spoken by a newsman in “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” it’s about not letting the facts cloud a good story.

According to block party organizers, a local monument toppled in the early 1970s. Members of Marion’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post then found a time capsule while investigating the damage.

Inside the capsule, a forgotten town-wide celebration dating back to the 1800s called “Marigold Days” was mentioned. After that, VFW members decided it was time to revive the party. The rest, as they say, is history.

On Aug. 24, residents again gathered for the annual event, held on the grounds of the Town House and along part of Spring Street.

This year, the Marion Recreation Department organized the block party. Department Director Jody Dickerson, along with many volunteers, brought a climbing wall, plenty of food, games, and music to the celebration.

The event started at 4 p.m. and ended at 10 p.m. with a bonfire on the ball field located behind the Town House.
