Freezin' for a Reason gears up for 2nd annual polar plunge
Don’t pack that swimsuit just yet! After their inaugural Freezin’ for Reason polar plunge drew more than hundred people to Mattapoisett Town Beach last New Year’s Day, Will and Michelle Huggins hope to welcome 2014 with another icy dip.
“The turnout was so great last year and people have been asking us so much about it,” said Michelle.
Working in collaboration with the Acushnet-based B.A.M. Foundation, the event raises money for families on the South Coast dealing with cancer. The funds, said Michelle, help with costs like paying bills and parking fees at the hospital that insurance doesn’t cover.
Like last year, polar plungers will be asked to take in pledges. This year, Michelle noted that donations will not be tax deductible.
“We want [families] to just take the money and do with it as they please – to have a little dignity and not have to have that,” said Michelle, whose family has faced its own financial struggles during her husband’s bouts with colon caner.
This year, she said Will plans to take the plunge into Mattapoisett Harbor.
“I’m really excited that he can do this,” said Michelle.
A heated tent provided by Sperry Tents as well as hot coffee and warm treats from local restaurants are expected to return this year.
The event is still pending approval from the town, but Michelle said she hopes for an even bigger crowd at the January 1 plunge. She would also like to allow more vendors to participate. Otherwise the event will be the same insane rush into ice-cold water.
“The name of the game is the same: Raising money for a huge amount of people who are suffering with this awful affliction,” she said.
