Words come to life at Rochester Memorial School
What do you call it when an amphitheater, a cynic and a babushka walk into a school? Vocabulary Day at Rochester Memorial School (obviously.)
On Friday, the third and fourth grade students and teachers dressed up as vocabulary words and paraded around the gym during the all school assembly to show off their wordy outfits.
This year was the first that the school held a vocabulary day and the classes went all out. The classes got help choosing words from other students who submitted options.
Fourth grade teacher Stephanie Cyr, who demonstrated her word perennial by dressing as a flower, said each class prepared for the day in different ways.
In her class, "two word wizards" pulled a reading word from a hat each day. The students practiced using their words in their writing and every day language.
Students had an added incentive to be creative with their Vocabulary Day costumes. Cape Cod Five donated several Barnes and Nobles gift certificates for the most inventive wordsmiths.
