With business booming, Matt's Blackboard makes plans to expand
Business is booming at Matt’s Blackboard Café, and to feed that demand the restaurant’s owner has an expansion planned.
On Monday, April 28, Selectmen approved a request from the restaurant’s owner and manager Matt Gurney to add 600 square feet to the dining room.
Gurney said a section of the building that offered a café atmosphere wasn’t working out as planned. He closed the café on January 1. Gurney said additional seating there would accommodate diners during the weekend rush.
“Usually on Friday and Saturday night people are standing around waiting for a seat,” Gurney said. “This [addition] will make it more comfortable for everybody.”
The restaurant’s footprint is 2,300 square feet. With the internal addition it will be 2,900 square feet. The restaurant won't be expanding into the adjacent shops or parking lot. It’s located in the Plumb Corner shops.
Police Chief Paul Magee, who was on hand for a different matter before the board, favored the plan.
“[Gurney] did come to me and wanted my input,” Magee said. “They run a very good business there. There’s never been any issues or problems so it certainly has my support.”
Selectmen unanimously approved the measure.
