Second annual 5K raises funds for student enrichment

May 5, 2014

To celebrate and support a good cause, about 200 people of all ages took to Tabor Academy’s Martin Field to participate in the second annual Sippican Schooner 5K Fun Run and Mini Run on Sunday.

The run served as a fundraiser for Volunteers at Sippican Elementary. The group is Marion’s Parent Teacher Organization and raises funds for enrichment programs at Sippican School.  According to race director Diana Martin, the money raised is dispersed throughout the year for field days, field trips and story-tellers for the enhancement of students’ education.

Martin said the group chose to do a 5K fundraiser because, “They seem to be popular among the community. Lots of people are doing them to stay healthy and active.”

Runners agreed with Martin.

Tom Gelson, who ran this year’s Boston Marathon and many previous marathon sand triathlons, came out to support Sippican School.

“It’s a great day and a great cause,” he said.

Even though runner numbers were down from last year, there was still an impressive turnout. The Mini Run, a half-mile long race around Martin Field for children ages 9 and under, had around 40 participants.  The Fun Run 5K race had about 160 runners.

Gelson finished first with a time of 18:33. Tim Horan finished second with 19:22. Geoffrey Noonan, 13, finished 20 seconds behind Horan for third place.

The volunteers will be holding their next fundraiser Saturday, May 31. The first-ever golf tournament will take place at the Little Harbor Country Club in Wareham and will feature shotgun style play, an auction and a luncheon.
