ORR grad selected for summer program at Bridgewater State
Arissa Underhill of Rochester was recently selected as one of 16 incoming freshman at Bridgewater State University to participate in a research program for math and science majors.
Underhill, a graduate of Old Rochester Regional High School, will work alongside professors and undergraduates this summer as part of the STREAMS program. STREAMS stands for Student Retention Enhancement Across Mathematics and Science.
To apply for the program, students have to place into pre-calculus as well as present a wide range of abilities and achievements.
Bridgewater State University encouraged applications from students traditionally underrepresented in science and mathematics in an effort to have a diverse and inclusive program.
After participating in the program, many students have continued doing research, are involved in other STREAMS programs and have become leaders on campus.
Along with the opportunity, Underhill has earned a full scholarship to take two college courses, receive free room and board and engage in mentored research work alongside her professors. She was previously accepted to the honors program at Bridewater.
Underhill said support from her parents and her teachers at ORRHS – especially English teacher Sarabeth Morell and guidance counselor Donna Perry – helped her achieve this opportunity.
This program is the latest honor for Underhill, who graduated from ORR with three Gold Presidential Community Service Awards as well as 13 scholarships. She was also one of several seniors to speak at graduation where she said birth disabilities and illnesses have given her insight into helping others.
