Rochester seniors ring in the New Year

Dec 31, 2014

On the eve of the New Year, one group celebrated with an early countdown at the Rochester Senior Center.

"It gives them an opportunity to celebrate," said Council on Aging Director Sharon Lally. "Most of them are not in a position to host a celebration at their home."

Lally began the noontime New Year's countdown when she first took on the position nine years ago.

"It's not Times Square, but it's the next best thing," she said.

Some senior citizens admitted they probably wouldn't be awake when the ball drops anyway.

"This is perfect because I never make it to midnight!" said Jackie Demers.

Seniors were treated to a meal provided by Matt's Blackboard and served by volunteers. They also shared some resolutions for 2015.

"Eat, drink and be merry" was one woman's plan for the new year.

Jean Armstrong said she wants to "stay healthy" this coming year, and her friend Diane Rego wants to keep a clean house.

Before the ball dropped, or in this case dozens of balloons, the group counted down from 60.

Afterwards Rick Leblanc played "Auld Lang Syne" while the group sang, followed by "Let there be peace on earth."
