Mattapoisett Fire extinguishes Cannon Street chimney blaze

Jan 28, 2015

Fire Chief Andrew Murray attributes collaboration among town agencies for successfully putting out a chimney fire at 13 Cannon St. on Monday morning.

The Fire Department received the call at 9:53 a.m. for the fire. Firefighters arrived three minutes later and found that a fault in the chimney allowed the fire to go into the wall of the house, spreading to the first and second floors of the house.

Murray said the fire was in the walls for a few hours before it became apparent.

The four people in the house got out safely, and firefighters were able to rescue the four cats in the household.

“All the town departments really pulled together and worked together on this,” Murray said.

Members of the Highway Department heard the call and arrived on the scene to help. Police officers also lent a hand and shoveled out the nearest hydrant so firefighters could get into the house quickly.

“With fifty mile per hour winds in the center of town and with buildings only ten feet apart, there’s the chance of losing the whole neighborhood,” said Murray. “With other town agencies pitching in, we were able to use our resources to get the fire knocked out.”

Murray said his department had a steady stream of calls during the blizzard, including several carbon monoxide calls.
