'Colorful Creations' shows off student artwork
If you're in need of some color in this winter's perpetual snow globe, the kids at Sippican School have you covered.
A selection of more than 100 pieces of student artwork is now on display with the exhibit "Colorful Creations" in the Marion Art Center's second floor gallery.
With limited space, art teacher Erin Kirk said she selected as many pieces as she could from her kindergarten through sixth grade students.
"It makes it special for the kids that are chosen," Kirk said. "I try to show as much breadth of work as I can."
The walls are lined with paintings, prints and drawings. There are also a number of small clay animals handmade by kids and fired in the school's kiln.
Clay is a favorite for the kids and their teacher.
"I can't help myself, they come out so great," said Kirk. "You can tell how much the kids love the clay by how they come out."
Third grader Jacob Hadley's clay fish was chosen for the show.
"I thought fishes are really cool and that they're cute," said Jacob. "I really like the tails."
His brother Lucas, a kindergarten student, also had a painting selected for the exhibit.
Having their artwork in a public space means a lot to kids.
"I hang them around the school all the time, but that becomes so common place for them," said Kirk. "When it's in a real gallery you cherish it a bit more."
Sixth grader Devin Miranda echoed that sentiment. Devin's Andy Warhol-esque print was on display at Friday's opening.
"It makes me feel like I really accomplished something," said Devin.
"Colorful Creations" will run through April 18. The Marion Art Center is located at 80 Pleasant St.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
