Coast Guard plans to remove navigational aids in Mattapoisett Harbor

The U.S. Coast Guard is proposing the removal of several navigational buoys in Mattapoisett Harbor, but Harbormaster Jill Simmons and Selectmen have issues with some of their suggestions.

Simmons presented the information at Tuesday’s Selectmen meeting, explaining that budget constraints have lead the Coast Guard to propose the removal or relocation of 43 federal aids to navigation in Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound and other connected waterways.

Of the four suggested buoys in Mattapoisett Harbor, three have been selected to “disestablish” and one to relocate. Selectmen and Simmons said two should stay put: One at Angelica Point, set to be removed, and one on Snow Rock, set to be relocated.

“I wouldn’t want to rely on the spindle as my aid to navigation,” Selectman Paul Silva. The spindle would be the only navigational aid left at Snow Rock if the buoy, located in a shallow area were removed.

Simmons said she spoke with her counterparts in Marion, who said they would not be comfortable assisting Mattapoisett in the night with only the spindle to guide them.

Resident Ray Andrews said a lighted buoy for Cuttyhunk Island is also supposed to get the ax along with other important navigational aids in the area.

“People are going to have to depend on electronics, and that’s not dependable,” he said.

“Depending on what they take out, we may have to replace it ourselves,” said Simmons, but that would put the maintenance and cost on the town.

Simmons said she will respond to the proposal on behalf of the town, and Selectmen agreed to write a letter supporting her position.
