Labor Day weekend lecture to look at Naushon island

Aug 26, 2016

The Mattapoisett Historical Society will present “Naushon: Largest of the Elizabeth Islands,” a lecture by Seth Mendell on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Shipyard Park.

Following Bartholomew Gosnold’s arrival on Cuttyhunk in 1602, the center of activity shifted to Naushon Island. Mendell will trace the history of the island, including the pirates and the village at Tarpaulin Cove, the British during the American revolution, the arrival of John Murray Forbes and the settlement at Hadley’s Harbor.
