VFW requests to donate building to Marion
The Benjamin D. Cushing VFW Post 2425 has requested that its building and grounds be donated to the Town of Marion.
The members of the VFW post, which is closing due to lack of membership, voted to transfer the land to the town free and clear of any incumbencies.
The building has long served as a polling center for the town, and members suggested it be used as a nexus for a community center or as a senior center. The only request was that the flag pole and monument in front were left in tact.
The building could also be used as a temporary town hall while renovations take place, Town Administrator Paul Dawson said on Tuesday night.
The Selectmen expressed their gratitude toward the post and all it has done for the town.
“The post has done so many things over the years. This is a very generous donation,” Chair Jody Dickerson said.
For Selectman Steve Cushing, the closing of the post was more personal.
“The post was named after my great uncle who lost his life in World War I,” he said. “This is the end of an era. There’s a lot going through my head right now.”
Dickerson also said the board has been discussing the possibility of a senior center, community center or recreation center. He added that the seniors are the town’s fastest growing population, and that the Music Hall isn’t a great fit for the Council on Aging.
“I think we owe it to the town to bring this forward at the Town Meeting,” he said. “No group of people and no person have done more for this town, ever.”
The Selectmen voted to include an article to accept the donation at the Fall Town Meeting on Oct. 24.
