A Marion homeowner has been sentenced to one year’s probation after a 2015 incident which saw her assault a Marion police officer.

Meredith Shachoy, 46, was sentenced in connection with an October 30 incident at her home on 18 South Street in Marion, where she assaulted a longtime Marion police officer and left the officer with what court documents referred to as “career-ending” injuries.

Marion Police officer Karen Ballinger responded to the home of Shachoy and her husband, Christopher, after neighbors complained of loud noise emanating from a house party on the property. Ballinger, in her report, stated that Shachoy was immediately enraged at the presence of Ballinger and fellow Marion police officer Jeffrey Tripp, and ordered them to leave her property. Shachoy continued to lash out.

Eventually, according to Ballinger, Shachoy punched her in the eye, and then kicked her in the mouth as she attempted to stand. Ballinger’s account, which is echoed by the reports of other officers on the scene, notes that Shachoy also physically assaulted Marion officer Jeffrey Trip, as well as Mattapoisett police officers Sean McAssey and Richard Nighelli. The account also reports that Shachoy repeatedly yelled at officers to “get the (expletive) off my property,” and was only subdued by use of a taser.

In court documents, Ballinger stated she had been treated for injury at Tobey Hospital, and that the assault had left her with a concussion. Short-term memory loss resulted from the concussion, and Ballinger reported that has been unable to work full-time since the incident.

Shachoy had initially been charged with six criminal offenses: three counts of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. Two charges of assault and battery and the charge of disturbing the peace were dismissed. However, Shachoy admitted to sufficient facts to warrant a finding of guilty on one charge of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

In addition to one year’s probation, the prosecutor recommended that Shachoy undergo anger management, and continue working with a therapist as needed.
