Norm Hills takes Marion's selectman seat in tight race

Norm Hills won the open selectman seat in a tight race in Marion on Friday night.

Hills won with 269 votes, Christine Winters received 248 votes, Matthew Vander Pol received 206, Michelle Ouellette Smith received 173 and Dale Jones received 108.

“It’s a relief,” Hills said of the close race. “It’s over and done with. With five people running you don’t know how it’s going to break down.”

Hills was also re-elected to the Planning Board with 529 votes in an uncontested race. He also serves on the Energy Management Committee, and has spent time on the Master Plan subcommittee, Conservation Commission and Community Preservation Committee.

Also elected to the Planning Board was Chris Collings, who got 98 write-in votes and incumbent Eileen Marum, who received 473 votes.

In other uncontested races: Patricia Decosta was elected to the Board of Assessors with 780 votes; Brad Gordon will take over as Town Moderator with 771 votes; Elizabeth Dunn will return to the Board of Health with 796 votes; Ray Pickles will return as Town Clerk with 612 votes; Selectman Steve Gonsalves will also be the town’s Tree Warden with 768 votes; Kate Ellen Houdelette and Ronald Gerhart were elected to Marion School Committee with 699 and 483 votes respectively; Paul Goulet was elected to ORR School Committee with 714 votes; and Jeffrey Oakes and Amanda Chace were elected to the Open Space Acquisition Committee with 643 and 558 votes respectively.

A total of 1,011 residents voted, which is about 25 percent of the 3,986 registered voters in town.
