Members of the Old Rochester Regional High School Class of 2017 have brains in their heads and feet in their shoes.

"You can lead yourself wherever you choose!" valedictorian Hannah Guard told the 175 other graduates gathered for the school's 55th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 3, echoing the immortal words of Dr. Seuss.

Though many students have chosen a particular path to embark upon following graduation, Old Rochester Superintendent Doug White encouraged those who have not to remain patient.

"I know that some of you have already found your passion," he said. "Some of you may have to wait, and I ask you to have patience. Recognize what you think about when your mind wanders. It always goes to something you are passionate about."

A total of 149 graduates have chosen to pursue higher education, while seven others will join the military.

The ceremony went off without a hitch, despite the looming presence of gray clouds on what was previously a sunny day.

"I saw rain was in the forecast, so I chose not to re-read the list of scholarship winners," said Principal Mike Devoll. "You're welcome. That was 27 minutes alone," he noted, having read the list at the school's Senior Awards Night days earlier.

Devoll read off his own list of senior superlatives, asking members of the graduating class to stand up if they fit the description. Included in the long list were: "Most Likely to Have Had Parents Who Graduated from ORR," "Most Impressive Beard," and "Most AP Classes Taken."

For the latter, Devoll counted off numbers of Advanced Placement classes until all students sat back down. Four AP classes, five, six -- there were still students standing.

"Oh God," Devoll said as he reached eight AP classes.

The list finally ended when a lone senior received tremendous applause for completing 10 AP courses -- the equivalent of just over a year in college credits.
