The NBSO Presents The Sibelius Connection on Sunday

Nov 22, 2017

On Sunday, November 26, at 3pm, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents an intriguing and inspired concert program when Lauri Porra, great-grandson of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, joins the NBSO. Under the direction of Maestro Yaniv Dinur, the orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of Porra’s Entropia: Concerto for Electric Bass Guitar and Orchestra. In addition to being a composer, Porra is a formidable bassist known for his work with the band Stratovarius, and he will be the featured guest artist in his own concerto. The program also includes his great-grandfather’s powerful Symphony No.1, filled with passionate melodies and soaring harmonies. Sibelius was and is a national hero whose enduring influence is responsible for Finland’s astounding number of great composers, conductors and performers.

The Sunday afternoon performance will take place at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. Concert sponsor is Joseph Abboud Manufacturing. Tickets are $30‒$65, with $10 student tickets (not available online), and are available for purchase through The Z box office, 508-994-2900, or online at www.nbsymphony.org. Free and convenient concert parking is available in the Z garage.

Please join us before the performance for Maestro Dinur’s pre-concert talk at 2:00pm in the Penler Space (adjoining The Z), free and open to the public. Guest artist Lauri Porra will join him for a conversation about the music to be performed.
