Mattapoisett residents express support for marijuana moratorium

Feb 6, 2018

Mattapoisett residents seem to agree – a temporary moratorium on the issuance of licenses for recreational marijuana is a good idea.

The Planning Board held a public hearing ahead of next week’s special Town Meeting where moratoriums for both recreational and medicinal marijuana will be on the agenda.

Despite a large turnout for the public hearing, only a few residents spoke up, all in agreement that the moratorium would be the right decision.

“I think this is a good idea to have a moratorium to provide bylaws,” resident Colby Rottler said. “I think the bylaws are very important for where we’ll put them so it’s not near schools or a residential neighborhood.”

Resident Joyce Almeida agreed, and urged residents to “dig deep into our moral consciousness.”

“We have to think of what’s going to happen to our kids, our grandkids,” she said. “I know the carrot dangling of the money is very appealing right now.”

The special Town Meeting is on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Old Rochester Regional.

The Council on Aging will be offering rides to Town Meeting for seniors who want to vote. To arrange a ride, call the selectmen's office at 508-758-4100 x4 and leave a name and address. Seniors will be picked up and dropped off by a Council on Aging van.
