Girls' basketball team falls in division championship

The Old Rochester girls' basketball team might've fallen in their quest to become state champions, but head coach Bob Hohne said their accomplishments stand regardless.

"It's a team with six freshmen," he said of the team that was recently named champion of the South Coast Conference. "To do what they've done is a great accomplishment."

The team played against Pembroke in the first game of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) state tournament, losing 32-38. Pembroke, Hohne said, was a team that he didn't know much about, which made planning ahead and strategizing difficult.

The team trailed as the first half of the game came to a close, 12-19. During the fourth period, the Lady Bulldogs were able to push the score to a 29-29 tie, with three minutes left in the game.

They couldn't hold onto the tie though, eventually falling to Pembroke.

"It was a bit of a defensive struggle," Hohne said. "The other team is more offensively mature than we are. Our team is a young one, they just don't quite have the offensive experience quite yet."
