A little more than a week after a nor’easter battered the South Coast, the tri-town is bracing for another strong storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning, beginning at 11 p.m. on Monday, and ending at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions, such as falling and blowing snow, strong winds and poor visibility, are expected.

Marion Police Chief John Garcia urged people to prepare as best they could before the storm hits.

“They’re talking about white out conditions, so if at all possible, run errands beforehand,” he said. “Make sure you charge your devices, whether it be a laptop or cell phone.”

Additionally, he encouraged people to check the batteries in their carbon monoxide detectors, especially if you plan on using a generator or space heater.

The Mattapoisett Fire Department posted some tips on Facebook, where they also told residents to check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. The department added that if you plan to set up a generator, make sure it is at least 10-15 feet away from your home, with the exhaust pointing away from the house.

Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee said a call will go out tonight from the department telling residents that if a warming shelter opens, it will be at the Senior Center on Dexter Lane.

“We’ll make that determination [to open it] later,” he said. “We’ll be posting info on the police, fire and town Facebook pages. If the shelter does open, we’ll put out another call.”

Rochester Senior Center Director Sharon Lally said that people who are unable to drive to the shelter can call the Senior Center or Rochester's emergency services for a ride to the Senior Center.

As for preparation, Magee figures most residents have it figure out by now.

“It should be second nature at this point,” he said. “Prepare for extended power outages, cold temperatures and high winds.”

Due to the back-to-back storms, Magee did warn against tree damage.

“People probably have damage from the previous storm, so be careful with trees coming down,” he said. “And stay off the roads when it gets bad.”

Also in anticipation of the storm, trash pick-up on Tuesday in Marion will be moved to Wednesday, and Wednesday’s curbside recycling will be moved to Thursday. Pick-up will also be moved one day later than usual in Mattapoisett.

Additionally, the Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen meeting has been postponed to March 27 at 6:30 p.m.
