ORR boys tennis team has new look, same target

It’s a new season with a new coach for the Old Rochester Regional boys tennis team, but the goal remains the same.

“We still have a similar expectation,” head coach Michael Beson said. “We want to get back to the [Division 3] South finals.”

The team looks a little different this season with Beson at the helm, and with four of the starting seven players from last year lost to graduation.

Former coach Russ Keeler is still involved with the team, but has taken a backseat to spend more time with his family. Beson, an English teacher at the high school, has been an assistant coach for four years, and feels confident about his team.

“We have four players with a good amount of experience,” he said. “We’ve been deep for a long time, though it’s always tough to lose four players.”

The team this year is led by seniors Sam Pasquill and Jahn Pothier, both who have been on the team since they were freshmen.

They, too, are confident in the team’s ability this season.

“We lost a lot of seniors, but we think we can do as well as we have in the past,” Pothier said.

Though the team is a little younger and less experienced than in years past, Pasquill doesn’t think that will be a disadvantage.

“It will give a lot of opportunity for younger kids to grow,” he said. “We like trying to give tips to help develop the young kids.”

Beson names Pasquill and Pothier as the two biggest leaders on the team, and said their presence alone helps less experienced players.

“They’re our number one and number two, and they’re also valedictorian and salutatorian,” Beson said. “They’re well-rounded, as smart as can be, and they’re leaders and role models in the school. I don’t have to do much to get the team to look up to them.”

The team will begin non-conference play on Friday against Plymouth North at ORR.
