High school Destination Imagination team heads back to globals

For the fourth year in a row, the Old Rochester Regional High School Destination Imagination team is headed to Destination Imagination's global finals.

Destination Imagination is, according to its website, "a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through...challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning."

This year, the high-school team, called H Squared, will compete in the "fine arts" challenge, which involved creating a theatrical production.

“We had to make a two-act musical,” sophomore Brett Rood said. “And we had to add two theater techniques.”

For its theater techniques, the team chose illusion and puppetry.

“The illusion was the puppet flying,” Rood explained.

The musical was essentially a love story – a mailman falls for a woman working in a flower shop who has a boyfriend. The girl eventually breaks up with her boyfriend, and the mailman is sad that his rivalry with the boyfriend caused the break-up. Above the flower shop live an older couple (the puppets) who watch the whole saga unfold. They decide to get involved and concoct a plan to bring the woman and the mailman together. The old man turns into cupid, flying above the set, and the musical ends happily ever after.

All the songs in the play was original. Rood wrote the music and senior Maggie Farrell contributed the lyrics.

“These kids have been in musicals and seen a lot of performances,” team leader Tina Rood said.

Rood used the Apple program "Garage Band" to create the music.

“I wanted to keep the same chords all throughout the songs,” he said.

The group started working on the music in December, with the goal to finish that before moving on. They then spent February break working on the set.

The team went on to win the regional competition and then the state competition.

“The states performance was much better than regionals,” Farrell said. “We were nervous.”

The globals are the week before Memorial Day in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the group is currently raising money for the trip. To donate, visit https://www.youcaring.com/bloomsvilleglobalstour-1155079.

As a fundraiser, the group is also hosting a car wash at the Mattapoisett Fire Department on May 19 from 10-2 p.m.
