'Buoys & Gulls' to raise funds at the Kittansett Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Wareham is gearing up for its 7th annual gala fundraiser, scheduled for June 15 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Kittansett Club in Marion.

Formerly known as the Kukoo Gala, it’s the biggest fundraising event the club has, raising approximately $35,000 each year.

The money helps to sponsor after-school programs for children ages 7 to 14. It also helps to buy new equipment and support the day-to-day functions of the club.

“We’ve been able to do a lot because of this gala,” said Wareham Club Director Kenny Fontes. “And I’m excited to see it come back every year.”

This year, the gala is hoping to make some waves with its new nautical name “Buoys & Gulls.” The name was chosen by Fontes, though he admited it started as a bit of a joke.

“I said it at one of our meetings without thinking, really,” Fontes said. “But as time went on, it just sorta stuck.”

When the gala started seven years ago, the club raised money by auctioning off decorated birdhouses in keeping with the “kukoo” theme. This year, auction prizes run the gamut from Red Sox tickets to a free stay in Suffix, England.

“We have a lot of neat stuff,” Fontes said. “And we’re hoping to raise a lot of money.”

The event will be held at the Kittansett Club in Marion and feature live music from K.G. Express as well as a buffet-style dinner. Tables for eight and 10 people are available.

“Tickets are a $100 per person,” Fontes said. “But all the money we raise goes directly to the Wareham Club.”
