Marion Music Hall to get upgrades
Marion Music Hall is slated to get new gutters and a new acoustical sound system after Selectmen approved the expenditure from an endowment fund set up more than a century ago to maintain the 1891 music hall.
Marion Music Hall Advisory Committee Chairman Chrissie Bascom had asked selectmen to approve the two separate requests, which the board did at their July 31, meeting.
In an email to Selectmen, Bascom said the Marion Music Hall Advisory Committee voted to spend up to $4,000 on a new sound system to replace its "ailing system". Previously, selectmen approved a $3,000 expenditure. But the Music Hall Advisory Committee came back and asked for $1,000 more.
"They have worked with an acoustical engineer and (Tabor Academy Music Director) Phil Sanborn who has a lot of expertise in this area," Dawson said.
Bascom said the cost of the new sound system is $2,718 and the wireless handheld system associated with that costs $549. Selectmen unanimously approved the request.
A second request had a larger price tag - up to $45,000 to replace the building's copper gutters. Dawson said $26,000 would come from the Music Hall endowment fund and the remainder from money left over from the Music Hall roofing project. Selectmen approved that request with few questions.
No mention was made of when this work would be begin.
