Suspect charged in Rochester house break-ins

Sep 19, 2011

Jared M. Lally, 24, of Hanover Court in Dartmouth, was charged last week with two counts of breaking and entering, larceny over $250 and destruction of property.

Lally  was stopped on September 1 for driving on a suspended license. After the arrest he was questioned about a number of Southcoast house break-ins and admitted to committing many of them.

Rochester Police Sergeant William Chamberlain brought Lally back to Rochester where he admitted to breaking into homes on High Street and Mary's Pond Road. Lally denied involvement in break-ins on North Ave and Pierce but police say they are hopeful that evidence recovered at the scene will link him to those breaks as well.

According to police, Lally said he committed the thefts to fuel his drug habit.

Three house break-ins struck Rochester the day after Tropical Storm Irene blew through the region on August 28.

Around 2:45 p.m., August 29, police responded on North Avenue to a reported break-in in progress. A teenager, home alone, saw a black sedan with two men and a woman pull up to the house. One of the men approached the house while the car left and he knocked on the door several times.

When no one answered the door, the teen heard shattering glass and fled upstairs into the bathroom and locked the bathroom door. One of the teen's relatives who lives nearby was called and confronted the intruder, who fled the home.

Police arrived and attempted to track the intruder with a K-9 but did not find him.

Later that afternoon, police responded to Mary's Pond Road for another break-in where jewelry had been stolen from a house.

There was also an attempted break-in at a house on High Street but it appears that the subject was unable to get inside.

According to police, all three house break-ins appear related based on evidence found at each location. All three are under investigation.

There was also another, likely unrelated, break-in on Friday in Rochester and police are reminding residents to stay vigilant and report any information they may have to the Rochester Police Department.
