Frigate property owner looking for input
The former Frigate restaurant property could get some new wind in its sails soon.
Wareham resident Joe Sauro, owner of the Gateway Tavern, bought the property at 806 Mill Road in June. He approached the Planning Board Monday night asking for the town’s input on the future of the property.
Although he didn’t have definite plans yet, Sauro said he has considered keeping the building as a restaurant or using the property for affordable housing units.
“I want to do something successful for the town,” he added. “Which is why I approached the Board. I don’t want to do something the town doesn’t want and leave a sour taste in its mouth.”
The 1.26-acre property has been used as a restaurant for well over 27 years, according to Bill Madden of GAF Engineering in Wareham. Madden said the property also uses town water and a septic system but wasn’t sure of the condition of the septic system.
“We’re just here to conduct an introduction of the parties and learn what the board’s thoughts were,” he added.
Although Chairman Jay Ryder said he wasn’t sure the Board could guide Sauro’s decision making, it was refreshing to hear Sauro is asking for the town’s input.
“It’s good to come to the planning board with ideas,” Ryder said. “Housing is something that we need, and we would entertain the options. We will work very closely with you no matter what you decide.”
