Old Rochester round up February 22 - 28

Feb 29, 2012

It was a record-setting day for the Old Rochester Regional boys and girls winter track teams at last Saturday’s All-State Meet, but nobody had a bigger day than junior Ally Saccone.

Saccone was seeded seventh in the girls 55 meter hurdles, and finished fourth in the finals with a time of 8.21, 0.20 better than her previous school record.

She was also part of the girls 4x200 relay team that finished fifth with a new school record of 1:47.31. Paige Santos, Morgan DaSilva and Hannah Walsh rounded out the relay team. Ryann Monteiro was 17th in the shot put at 33-00.50.

Saccone will run the hurdles at this Friday’s New England Meet; the relay team will also compete.

Mike Wyman set a new school record with his 13th-place finish in the 1000 meters (2:34.43). Dan Donohue placed 14th in the 300 meters with a time of 36.84. The boys 4x200 relay team of Colin Knapton, Nikolas Coelho, Donohue and Nick Mathieu.

After finishing the regular season at 12-3-6 (9-1 in South Coast Conference play), the Old Rochester Regional ice hockey team clinched a share of the SCC championship—its first title in 20 years—and the sixth seed in the MIAA state tournament. They will face Dartmouth, who defeated Apponequet 6-0 in preliminary-round action Tuesday night, in a 7 p.m. game Thursday at Tabor Academy’s Travis Roy Rink.

The Bulldogs closed out the regular season last Wednesday with a 3-3 tie against Ashland. Max Sherman, Jeremy Lawton and Nick Goerges scored the goals, while Sherman, Bobby Stickles and Cam Severino each notched an assist. Tim Kelleher made 22 saves in net.

The ORR girls basketball team finished at 14-6 on the season to earn the eighth seed in the MIAA state tournament’s Division 3 South, and hosted No. 9 Medway in first-round action on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, Medway proved to be too much all around as ORR fell 62-29 and was bounced out of the tournament in the first round for the second straight year.

The boys basketball team will travel to Dighton-Rehoboth Wednesday night to open tournament play in the MIAA’s Division 3 South. The Bulldogs earned the ninth seed in Division 3 South after finishing the season at 14-6. It’s their first trip to the tournament since 2007-08, making it the first postseason experience for everyone on the roster. They’ll face a tough foe in the eighth-seeded Falcons, who were also 14-6 this season.
